In this tutorial, we show how to build a complete AI agent step by step using OpenAI’s visual interface. You’ll see how to connect logic, add safety guardrails, use real data sources, and automate responses — all through a clean, drag-and-drop design experience.

The OpenAI Agent Builder represents a major step forward in no-code AI development. Instead of programming back-end logic or writing integration scripts, creators can now visually connect nodes that perform advanced functions like file retrieval, code execution, moderation, and conditional logic. Key Features Introduced in the Tutorial
Guardrails
We begin by configuring Guardrails to ensure safe, policy-aligned interactions. Guardrails detect sensitive or inappropriate content, block jailbreak attempts, and can check for hallucinated outputs before they reach the user. This layer of moderation helps make the system dependable for educational and public-facing contexts.

Classifier Agent (JSON Output)
We start with a Classifier Agent that uses the model to analyze user input and determine intent. The agent outputs its decision in a structured JSON format, which makes it easy to connect to the following logic node in the workflow. At first, the model produced detailed reasoning and long text responses inside the JSON, but we simplified the structure to keep it compact and easy to parse. Now, each classification result includes only one key field — the category — which identifies the user’s request type.
The simplified output format looks like this:

Keeping the JSON structure short and consistent makes the agent faster, easier to debug, and better suited for automation inside OpenAI Agent Builder.
If/Else Logic
Next, we use If/Else logic to route user input to different paths based on intent. This allows the agent to respond dynamically—providing coding help, explaining concepts, recommending tutorials, or guiding users to contact support. Conditional routing is what turns a static chatbot into a structured, decision-driven system.

File Search
The File Search tool connects the agent to an uploaded document or a vector knowledge base, enabling retrieval-augmented generation (RAG). This lets the agent reference verified information rather than relying only on model memory, improving both accuracy and transparency.

Web Search
With Web Search, the agent can pull fresh, trusted information directly from the internet. In this demo, results are limited to lbsocial.net so that all responses come from curated, reliable educational sources. Domain-restricted search ensures the AI works within a controlled knowledge environment.

Code Interpreter
The Code Interpreter introduces live computation inside the workflow. The agent can write and execute Python code to solve problems, analyze data, or debug examples. This feature turns conversational AI into an interactive problem-solving environment—ideal for data, math, and programming tasks.

Data Transform
To improve readability, we include a Data Transform node that reformats structured outputs like JSON into concise, user-friendly text. This step refines the agent’s responses, bridging the gap between machine output and human-ready communication.

Widgets
Finally, we create a Widget form that collects user information—such as name, email, and question—and sends it directly to info@lbsocial.net.Widgets make the agent interactive, allowing seamless transitions between automated support and human follow-up.

Putting It All Together
Once all nodes are configured, we publish the workflow and deploy it using ChatKit or the OpenAI SDK. The resulting agent can classify questions, explain content, execute code, perform searches, and connect users through forms—all built visually, without a single line of code.
